My Baby

SPOILER ALERT:  I've watched 5 episodes of Season 3.

OK FIRST - the new kitchen's assistant better keep her mitts OFF Alfred.  He's Daisy's.

OMG Mary's been married like...a week...and she lays around in bed until noon, eating breakfast. It's hilarious.  Like mother, like daughter.  Damn...wish things were like that today.

LOL  Mr. Carson is freaking out because Mrs. Crawley hired a Ethel, aka; a prostitute.  This is delicious.  And I love how Mr. Mosely is the one to bring the cheery news.

Oh geez - poor Sybil!  That fool doctor is going to kill her!  Let Dr. Scot help her, stat!

Maggie Smith line of the night:  "A woman of my age can face reality far better than most men."

OH MY GOD, SYBIL'S DEAD!!!  Oh, I'm so sad.  I've gone through five tissues already!!!  Horrible!!!  PaPA should have LISTENED to Dr. Scotty!!!  I'm SO glad MaMA spoke up and told him so, too.  And in front of the whole family.  That was awesome.  You GO, girl!

And WHAT was that comment from the prison guard about that witch who hates Bates?!  Is she dead?!

Holy crap, I can't believe what a horrendous turn this episode took.  And WOW - let me tell you - I can't believe this aired months ago in the UK and I never stumbled upon it online!  I truly do surf with one eye closed.

  1. I was a WRECK about Sybil! I kept thinking they were going to save her somehow... Poor Tom. Does he stand a chance against the Crawleys??

  2. OMG I kinda knew Sybil was going to die because some asshat posted a bunch of spoilers under a DA photo that the local PBS station posted last week! I was SO PISSED! And then I was trying to tell myself that he just made all that up to screw with our heads. But when the doc expressed concern over her swelling ankles and confusion, I knew what was happening (I was induced early for both my boys because of swelling and protein in my urine).
I don't think that new kitchen maid is interested in Alfred, I think she's got her eye on the new footman, Jimmy--just like Thomas (and what is up with everyone giving the new guy all the first footman duties over Alfred? Is it just cause they all think he's hot?).
And I loved that little moment between the dowager and Carson; it got my tears going all over again. And her talking to her son after Cora blamed him in front of everyone was great.

    1. 1) "Asshat" is a truly hilarious word I do not use often enough.

      2) I feel so bad for you! You know my fear of spoilers.

      3) Love most moments with the Dowager and anyone she doesn't usually converse with. I'd love a moment between she and Daisy. They are both frank...but in totally different ways.

      4) Cora = my hero! They so rarely speak UP in situations like that. Usually I'm left saying "Come ON! Speak UP!" I've almost given up. It was quite refreshing.

  3. Oh Carla, I knew it was coming, too (I stupidly and voraciously read the BBC synopsis of the season) but still sobbed. Thomas breaking down got to me, too, and forget about Carson -- how I love him. Why is Bates so hated by his cellmate and that guard? Did I miss something? Or all they just horrid little men? And my guess is that Alfred and the adorable new kitchen maid might be related? (Luckily, the synopsis didn't give ALL the small details of every episode!)

    1. Ooooh G - I skip that stuff all the time...but I can't wait until the season is over so I can go back and read it all!

Questioning the Bates thing, too. I don't get it at all. He pretty much keeps to himself.

WOW!! Now I want to go back and watch - or listen to, rather - all the interaction between Alfred and the new kitchen maid! I thought he was sweet on her, too.

  4. George,
It did seem like Alfred knew the new kitchen maid but idk, he seems to be sweet on her.
I forgot about Thomas breaking down. I was surprised and felt so bad for him. He really liked her.

  5. Thomas breaking down really got me too. He does have his moments, doesn't he?

I was too stunned to cry right after she died, but when Edith and Mary stood over her and cried I lost it. And I had to laugh/cry when Edith asked if they would get along better from now and and Mary said probably not. lol

Oh, how I love this show.

    1. a) Thomas slayed me. I love him. I love how broken he is. You know there is a little boy lost inside of him.

      b) I was the same way. I didn't cry at all when she died. And then I lost it when Cora sat down with her and called her her baby. And then I commented to my husband (after he brought me a box of tissues) that I was surprised at myself for NOT crying when she died...and wasn't surprised when the belated tears began.

  6. What a great show. I laughed, I cried, and I'm still crying. I'm in shock over Sybil's death and the complete ineptitude of the doctors. They just stood there..there's nothing we can do. I can't wait to see what becomes of the baby and her impeding baptism. You know they don't want any Catholics in the family.

On an aside, can you all picture Alfred as JAMMF??

    1. Erin!!! Did you see my post about Alfred/Jamie on My Purgatory on Facebook? I took one look at that kid on the very first episode and said "OH MY GOD!" He's certainly not a dead ringer by any means...but he's got a lot of qualifications, the first being his MASSIVE size. The very first thing Carson says to him is "Are you really that (tall)?" (Not sure the exact word.) Add that to the red hair, the fact that he's a Brit, the fact that he's 22...and I can see him definitely getting a call to read for the part.

PS - YES YES YES! While she was dying, they were just STANDING there! Obviously the local doc knew what was what. Although I think he sortof had this attitude of "I told you so" while she was dying!!

  7. Ok I'm going to be a dissenting voice here--I thought it was a good episode, and this was a spoiler I did NOT know about (unfortunately I HAVE heard others), but I have to say that I found the whole Sybil's death plot a little underwhelming. DH and I watched it--and you could pretty much predict from about five minutes in that Sybil was toast. Every time the evil Doctor was like, SHE'S FINE!! CANKLES ARE PERFECTLY NORMAL!!, John and I would just roll our eyes and be like, clearly Sybil's a goner.

I thought the acting was fine (esp Elizabeth McGovern) but idaknow...IMO they did the "preeclampsia death fake out" storyline way better on ER back in the day...

    1. <<>> I am PEEING!!! LOL You are so right. Although I wasn't 100% positive until Sybil gave her mother her final wishes before falling asleep. That's when I told Tom "Oh CRAP! This is it! She's not waking up!"

I have to say, it really affected me. All day yesterday I was in a bit of a fog. Seriously. Couldn't shake it!

Oh that ER episode, I will never forget it. That episode seared my brain.
